10 Valuable Lessons I Learned After 40 Moves

7/27/2023

Moving is an exciting adventure that offers new beginnings and possibilities.

However, after experiencing forty moves, I have come to realize that constant relocation can take a toll on both financial and emotional resources. It's like transplanting a tender plant repeatedly, preventing it from establishing deep roots and thriving. Through these experiences, I've gained valuable insights that have reshaped my approach to life and possessions.

Here are the ten important lessons I've learned:
1. Travel Light

Each move becomes easier when you own fewer belongings. By minimizing your possessions, you not only reduce the logistical burden of packing and transporting items, but you also free up your financial and emotional resources for more meaningful experiences.

2. Keep Only What's Essential

Moving necessitates making decisions about what truly matters to you. I've adopted the perspective of envisioning a fire in my home and having to grab only a few cherished items in a matter of seconds. If an item is replaceable, it's best to leave it behind and carry only what holds genuine value.

3. Part Ways with Books

As much as I love reading and collecting books, I had to let go of moving them long ago. Books can be heavy and occupy significant space. Instead, I've turned to digital or library options, saving myself the hassle of carting around heavy boxes.

4. Invest Wisely

Rather than accumulating a plethora of mediocre possessions, opt to invest in high-quality items that align with your needs and lifestyle. A single well-chosen purse that complements any outfit is more valuable than a collection of thirty that rarely see the light of day.

5. Neutrals for Versatility

Through my travels, I've discovered that neutral-colored clothing and decor pieces offer greater versatility than vibrant ones. Neutrals allow me to mix and match effortlessly, making the most out of my wardrobe and interior design.

6. Embrace Resourcefulness

Items that serve multiple purposes are invaluable during moves. Whether it's a sofa that transforms into a bed or a lipstick stain doubling as blush, resourceful possessions prove to be true lifesavers in transitional periods.

7. Find Your Universal Activity

Having an activity you can engage in anywhere serves as an anchor, grounding you in your new environment. It becomes your compass, helping you connect with others and serve your community.

8. Turn Limitations into Opportunities

Limitations can spark creativity and ingenuity. For example, not having access to an art store led me to explore alternative materials, resulting in artwork that felt more authentic and unique. Embrace limitations as a gateway to new possibilities.

9. Cultivate Connections

Connecting with your new environment and its people is crucial. Seek out activities and events that align with your interests to forge meaningful connections and create a sense of belonging.

10. Embrace Minimalism

As I continued to move, I realized how little I truly needed to lead a fulfilling life. Embracing minimalism allowed me to focus on experiences and relationships, bringing greater contentment and simplicity into my life.

Through the ups and downs of forty moves, I've learned that moving frequently can be both challenging and enlightening. By adopting a minimalist mindset, investing wisely, and embracing resourcefulness, I've transformed each move into an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Remember, life is about experiences, connections, and personal growth—things that cannot be measured by the quantity of possessions we own. So, embrace the journey, cherish the lessons, and savor the joy of new beginnings.
