The desert is a timid lover. It reveals itself slowly. Its barren surface is a facade meant to keep the impatient from staying here long. It's as though the landscape has been stripped of every overindulgence and distilled to its essential, grandiose spirit. Curiously, there is something about the austerity of the desert that makes me feel like: "I have arrived. I am home." I am mesmerized, addicted and seduced.
Paintings inspired by the colors, textures and spirit of the Great Salt Lake. For a person who's experienced so much geographical movement & upheaval, I welcome the sentiment that the ethereal, other-worldly landscape of the Great Salt Lake imparts to my soul: "I have arrived. I am home."
What is the significance of 108 holes on a canvas? According to traditional Buddhist teaching, 108 represents the number of mortal desires which one must overcome to achieve Nirvana. Mala Beads are often used as a meditation tool, so that a mantra can be recited as you move your fingers along the beads.
Blue - the most universally loved color.
Many requests lately for commission paintings including blue. In approaching my work, I always try to chose a varied palette of textures - not only in terms of how they will appear on the canvas, but also how they will contrast with each other. June 24 - August 5

Catch the Sky & Morning Flight acrylic & mixed media on canvas 36 x 48 in. each I am starstruck! Look who just dropped by the studio: Utah State Senator Derek Kitchen!
Throughout our meeting, my grin was so huge I could barely contain my cool. This man is a LEGEND. In 2014 Kitchen and his partner sued the state of Utah for marriage equality. This case legalized same sex marriage in Utah and five oher states in the western U.S., establisjhing a graoundbreaking case law that led to nationwide marriage equality in 2015. I am honored to be in alignment with other humans who contribute to the health, vitality and betterment of our community. Senator Kitchen had-picked one of my paintings to be auctioned during a "HousepARTy fundraiser on May 31st. All proceeds will go to Senator Kitchen's re-election campaign. Last night's opening reception for the BDAC 47th Annual Statewide Competition was a resounding success!
Thank you to all of the friends & family who attended, the talented artists who contributed to the show, and to Bountiful Davis Art Center for investing in Utah's vibrant arts community. A special thanks to Chauncey Secrist & Nancy Rivera for curating a fabulous show. I see you PUPU. On view May 13 - July 16 |
This blog was created to share my belief that the art-making process is a catalyst for transformation and personal empowerment. I am living proof.
