2019 Rooted
After experiencing a volcanic eruption and two mandatory evacuations in Hawai'i within six months, I returned to Salt Lake City, Utah, to be closer to family. In this time of upheaval, my canvases became anchors—physical manifestations that grounded me to the earth after the violent tremors beneath my feet.
My painting practice transformed into a vehicle for assimilating my recent experiences and establishing a sense of order amidst the chaos. Each time my life undergoes significant change, I turn to painting to help me feel "rooted." No matter where I am in the world, painting is my home.
The works in this series are crafted using salt from the Great Salt Lake, iron-rich Utah dirt, foraged sawdust, plaster, repurposed paint, metallic pigments, ash, and local newspaper, all of which contribute to the rich tapestry of my journey.
