2016 Sunday Best
Sunday Best is a series of paintings born from my immersion in the scorching summer of Salt Lake City, Utah, and its surrounding landscapes. During this idyllic time, I ascended the Uinta Mountains, explored the caves of Timpanogos, wandered the bone-dry beaches of Antelope Island, and felt the relentless sun of Moab. The American West reveals itself as a peculiar and mysterious landscape, filled with overwhelming vastness, rawness, and beauty.
The majority of the materials used in this series were sourced locally, including red earth, sand, sawdust, plaster, and local newspapers. The highly textured canvases, combined with the reflective nature of the metallic powders, result in paintings that may exhibit slightly different colors than depicted, inviting viewers to engage with the evolving character of each piece. Through this series, I celebrate the unique essence of the land and my deep connection to its transformative power.
