2015 Spring Favorites
Spring Favorites is a collection of paintings created during the Winter and Spring of '15 in Calgary, Alberta, reflecting my artistic responses to my environment. Having recently returned from Paris, I am struck by the stark contrast between the two cities: one steeped in history and maturity, the other vibrant and youthful. Calgary feels like a city eager to grow up, relentlessly pursuing development. Everywhere I look, new urban projects—buildings, skyscrapers, bridges, and homes—are rising at breakneck speed.
Inspiration struck to create paintings that embody a sense of history and maturity, artworks that “look old,” as if they’ve been left outside to weather the elements. I often imagine what wind, rain, sun, and snow would do to a piece of art if it were exposed for a year. My goal is to capture that essence using paint and mixed media.
The thought of introducing one of my paintings into a sleek, ultra-modern interior filled with stainless steel and concrete excites me. I revel in the juxtaposition. Ultimately, I hope my paintings serve as gentle reminders of the passage of time, illustrating that everything ages and that one of the few constants we can rely on is the welcome embrace of time itself.
