2008 – Surfacing
2008 – Surfacing
After a long absence from painting, I returned determined to create on my own terms—no easels, no brushes, no color wheels, no preconceived ideas.
The blank canvas lies flat on the floor. We face each other. I touch it, run my hands over the taut cotton, smile, kiss it, and whisper thanks. Paint squeezes directly onto the surface. A roller moves it—blending colors, carving lines and shapes. Texture emerges from plaster, sawdust, sand, newspaper, ink, and rubbing alcohol. Water is essential: straight from the tube, acrylic is rigid; with water, it exhales, relaxes, and begins to dance.
I tilt and manipulate the canvas, responding intuitively to the forms that arise. Nothing is planned—the work directs me. This fearless abstract process is one of adding and subtracting until balance and harmony appear.
These paintings are celebrations of redemption. Once, I saw myself as broken and lacking. Today, I stand empowered, grateful, renewed. Through Surfacing, I honor the transformative power of choice.
