How To Sign Paintings

10/20/2021

Q. I was hoping you could tell me how you sign these textured pieces. I thought I saw you signing the back of the canvas? I assume I could also use the side edge.

A. Yes, you saw me sign the back of my canvass. On the back, I typically write the name of the painting, the size and my signature.

Some of my paintings are so textured that signing the front becomes impossible. Other times they are so light in color that singing the front would "steal the show". For these pieces, I typically do not sign the front either. Other times, when I feel it is appropriate, I like to use a very light grey marker to sign the front. (See image above)

Keep in mind that signing the sides of your canvas is also an option, however if someone decides to frame your painting, your signature would not be visible.

When it comes to markers, I prefer the brand Copic because they are archival, permanent and refillable.

Why sign with a pen VS a brush? I don't use the brush in any part of my artistic process, so it does not make sense to me to authenticate my work using a brush.
