How Do You Handle Criticism In Art?

1/30/2017

Every time a comment is posted on one of my YouTube videos, I receive an email notification in my inbox. Imagine how I felt when I opened up my email one recent morning, and found that two complete strangers had said my Abstract Painting Blindfolded Video was: “VERY UGLY” and “its ugly AF”. Hurt.

The trouble with posting a video like this is that it is taken out of context. It is a moment in time. One paragraph of the story rather than the whole book.

When I called my painting “Beautiful” I was referring to the process of painting without preconceived ideas and not being afraid to make a mark.

Many of my students are terrified of the blank canvas because they are too afraid to make a mistake. My reason for painting blindfolded was to merely encourage them and to show that there is nothing to fear.

It is one thing to paint inside your own studio behind closed doors. It is an entirely different level of vulnerability to share your work with the world. Criticism always hurts. Even from strangers.

My MO is compassion for the artist’s efforts. I’ve seen how experiences such as this can irreparably damage the desire to share our creative gifts.

Do not let criticism silence you.

People that are harsh at criticizing are selfish! Unfortunately they are unable to see their own crude personality! Remember... what goes around, comes around...

It would be easy to say "don't let it bother you' but it's a lot more difficult to do. I often smile & nod, which makes me feel better because I have a smile on my face - reminding myself physically that I'm okay. Its amazing how that can change my mental outlook as well.

You can only change yourself (and your reaction). Everyone else is responsible for their behaviour.

You know your ultimate truth.

Samantha please know how much of an inspiration you have been to me as artist and an individual. I have a lot of respect for you because you have integrity and courage. Surround yourself with people who love and support you and know that the world needs more people like you.

I love the full on explosion of color that happens so quickly! It shows that the Spirit flows freely without the Ego getting in the way. Most people second guess their creations as they are happening. I think this is a beautiful teaching example of how everyone can create something when they live without fear and stop doubting that inner voice that is always there to guide them.
