Registered for a Fearless Abstract Painting workshop? Find the answers to 20 Frequently Asked Questions below: 1. Where can I find the supply list for your workshops? You can find a supply list of materials by clicking HERE 2. What kind of paint roller do you want us to bring? You can find an image of the paint roller by clicking HERE. You can purchase one or more from your local hardware store, or on Amazon. In addition to the paint roller, please keep in mind you will also need paint roller refills like the ones shown here. 3. What kind of paints should I bring? My favorite paint brands are: Golden, Liquitex Basics, Windsor & Newton Galleria and Winsor & Newton Professional. That said, please bring whatever brands of acrylic paints you prefer and/or already have. We will work with whatever you bring! For more information regarding paints, please read the following blog posts: Artist VS Student Quality Paints & Pros & Cons of Buying Cheap Paint. 4. Can I bring different colors than the ones suggested on your supply list? Yes. The colors on my Supply List are meant as suggestions only. Please feel free to bring colors that resonate with you, rather than the ones listed. We are so much more likely to paint something that we love, if we work with colors that we love. Please keep in mind that this is not a “paint by numbers” class. 5. Do I really need two canvases? Yes. Please bring at least 2 canvasses for a one-day workshop, and 2-3 canvasses for a 2-day workshop. That said, the number of canvasses my students complete is extremely varied. I’ve had students work on the same painting for 2 days, and I’ve had other students finish 6 canvasses in 2 days. 6. What should I wear? Wear something comfortable that you don’t mind getting paint on. This includes shoes! Once acrylic paint dries on your clothes, it does not come off. Please keep in mind that although you might be careful with not getting paint on yourself, your neighbor might not be! 7. Do we get a lunch break? Yes. We will take a lunch break at noon or 12:30pm. This breaks up the day into 2 sessions: morning (10am—12pm) & afternoon (1pm – 4pm). You are welcome to eat in class, work during your lunch break, or go out for lunch. The time is yours, and you are encouraged to use it as you please. If you chose to go out for lunch, please be back on time so as to not disrupt the class once we've gotten started. 8. Will our paintings be dry by the end of the workshop? Honest answer? Maybe. We will make every attempt to have our paintings dry by the end of the workshop. However, please be prepared to make adequate preparations for taking home a wet painting on the final day just in case. We work with a lot of water and texture, and depending when and how these elements were used, longer drying times might result. 9. How should I transport my paintings home? Please be prepared to make adequate preparations for taking home a wet painting just in case your paintings are not dry at the end of the workshop. Many students line the back of their car trunks with a plastic shower curtain, a plastic picnic tablecloth, or a drop sheet. Depending on the venue, it may be an option to leave your painting drying overnight in the classroom. In this case, it will be up to you to make arrangements with the venue to pick up your painting (s) at a later date. 10. Can I bring a hair dryer to help dry my painting? Yes. Although this is not a method I use myself, many students like this option to speed up the drying process. The only drawback (and let's be honest, is this really a drawback?) that I’ve seen to using this method, is that hairline cracks may appear on your painting as a result of the the top layers drying faster than the bottom layers. It is entirely up to you wether you want to do this or not. 11. Can I bring fluid paints? Yes. If you prefer fluid paints to the regular acrylic paint in tubes, you are certainly welcome to bring them instead. My favorite brands are Golden and Da Vinci. 12. Can I bring heavy body paints? Yes. If you prefer heavy body paints to the regular, less viscous paints in tubes, please feel free to bring them. The only "drawback" to heavy body paints, is that you might have to use a little more water in order to manipulate them. My favorite brand is Liquitex. 13. Should I bring a tablecloth? Yes. Please find an image of my favorite table covering here. Other options might include (and are certainly not limited to): regular drop cloths, shower curtains, plastic picnic table cloths, clear plastic or paper. 14. I watched your YouTube videos and you paint on the floor. Will we be painting on the floor? No. We will not be painting on the floor. I prefer to paint on the floor in my own studio, but I certainly don’t expect my students to do so. We will be painting on tables. 15. Can I bring canvasses in different sizes than the ones listed on your supply list? Yes. Feel free to bring in whatever size(s) you are most comfortable with. That said, please keep in mind that there are good reasons why I suggest starting out on a 24” x 30” canvass. In my opinion, 24" x 30" canvasses are the perfect size: Not too big, and not too small. You will find that using a smaller canvas will be more difficult since we are using a tool (paint roller) that spreads the paint around very quickly and bluntly. Alternatively, a larger canvas will require the use of more materials (texture products & paints), and they can be more challenging to manage for the novice student. Please leave giant canvasses at home. Often, classrooms have a limited amount of space, and by brining in a giant canvas, you are borrowing from everyone else's space. 16. I am travelling and the canvasses are too big to fit in my suitcase. What do you suggest for me to do? For more information, please read this blog post: How To: Pack Your Painting Supplies for Travelling 17. Can I use house paint? For more information, please read this blog post: House Paint VS Acrylic Paint 18. What is your favorite brand of metallic powders? For more information, please read this blog post: Fearless Metallic Powders: Suggested Brand 19. Can I take photos/videos during your class? Yes. Photos and videos can be taken during class for personal use. Please abstain from uploading videos on YouTube and other social media platforms without the instructor's permission. 20. What is the total cost of the materials on your supply list? The total cost of materials vary greatly depending on the products/brands you choose. For example, buying student quality paint vs artist quality paint will make a significant difference to your bill. The same can be said for choosing a thin profile vs a deep profile canvas. On average, students spend $120 USD on their supplies. Questions? Email sam@samanthadasilva.com Comments are closed.
