The other day, while standing in the check out line at a local health food store, I overhead an exchange between two people about one of the posters hanging on the community billboard: “Oh look!” Said one to the other: “Another yoga workshop! How unusual! Just what we need!” They both laughed and shook their heads in joyous disapproval. They were referring to the abundance of similar posters hanging on the wall. You see, I live in a corner of the world where art and yoga workshops are not just abundant, but they are commonplace.
The experience left me thinking about my own upcoming art & yoga retreat, and a sudden wave of inadequacy and self-doubt washed over me. Am I just adding to the noise? Does the world really need another painting and yoga retreat? After some time in contemplation, I came back to the reason why I do what I do. The answer is simple: I love it. I deeply, and sincerely love making and teaching art. What I love about it is seeing people transform their lives. The experience is nothing short of bliss for me. I realized that what the world needs is not only people who do what they love, but it also needs them to share it. So, does the world need another song? Another photo of a yoga pose on the beach? Another fashion blogger, recipe, or actress? The answer is a resounding Yes! When we express our unique talents, we do each other a favor by making the world a more beautiful place to live. This blog was created to share my belief that the art-making process is a catalyst for transformation and personal empowerment. I am living proof.
