I paint a lot. It’s my full time job. On average I paint approximately 50 canvasses a year. If we do the math, that's 50 canvasses a year, times 11 years for a total of 550. I think the most interesting thing about this piece of math is that I did not feel truly confident in my craft until around year 4 or 5. That means, I painted at least 200 canvasses to feel like I had a deeper, well-rounded understanding of what I was actually doing.
I think that’s an encouraging piece of insight for someone who’s just started: Be patient with yourself! There's also this to keep in mind: 10,000 hours (500 Canvases) As Malcolm Gladwell discussed in his bestseller, “Outliers“, to become an expert it takes 10,000 hours (or approximately 10 years) of deliberate practice. Wherever you are in your journey, enjoy the process. Comments are closed.
