I have a ritual that helps me connect with my surroundings: I seek out the dirt. It reminds me of a powerful scene from Gladiator, where the protagonist crouches to touch the earth before facing his destiny. In that moment, he acknowledges the land beneath him, grounding himself before the battle ahead. “Setting Myself Free” captures this essence of connection. It’s a reminder that we come from dust and will return to it. Embracing this cycle has taught me the true meaning of freedom. Through creating and sharing this artwork, I hope to inspire others to forge their own connections to the places they inhabit. Setting Myself Free, Iron-rich Utah dirt, salt from the Great Salt Lake, foraged sawdust, local newspaper, refurbished paint, and plaster on canvas, 48" x 36" Comments are closed.
