In this blog post, I answer student questions regarding: Canvas stretching, donating artwork, & where to buy art supplies in Calgary and surrounding area. Question: Can you tell me who you used to stretch canvasses? Also, I was impressed by that huge painting you did as a commission, and I couldn't help asking myself if you used house paints as well as it would have cost a fortune in artist paints? If you can let go of your secret of course I'd love to know. Answer: To answer your questions regarding my large commission, I did not use house paints. I used paints I bought from the art store and yes, I did spend a fortune! I used a place in Calgary called Cimarron Sales to stretch the canvas. If you are looking to get canvasses stretched (but not as big as the commission I did) for a competitive price, I recommend a place called Chroma Surge. Question: I am hoping to donate art towards events and fundraisers etc but not sure where to start. I was on your page and noticed you have a long list of donations - Would you be able to tell me how you got started donating artwork or if there is a contact for where to get started with it? Answer: My approach to donating artwork for fundraisers has changed a lot. At the beginning of my art career, I was approached by several people/organizations and I never turned a single one down. As you've been able to observe from my CV, the list is long! The way I do things now is to spend some time making a list of organizations, events and charities who's values resonate with my own. I then approach them and offer my paintings as donations. This is a great way to place your products with organizations that you feel might encompass your brand while contributing to a great cause. Question: With my next pay check, I want to buy my sister paint supplies as a surprise and gift to help her with her dream of continuing her love for painting. Could you point me in the right direction of where to go and get stuff for her? Answer: When I am in Calgary, I shop for art supplies at Swinton's Art Supply or Inglewood Art Supply. Michael's has a great selection of Liquitex products (one of my favorite brands) but I only shop there during sales or with a coupon (look on their website for coupons).
In Airdrie, I recommend a little shop called the Paintworks Art Studios & Supplies. In Red Deer, I shop at Alberta Art & Drafting Supplies.
