Lately, I’ve been reflecting on Instagram’s role in our lives. I see it as a powerful tool—to share my work and connect with others—but I also recognize its potential downsides. As a sensitive creator, I’ve established some personal guidelines to use Instagram intentionally and avoid its pitfalls. I hope these inspire you to do the same. 1. Follow Your Weight
I noticed my feed was becoming overwhelming as I followed more people and businesses. So I set a simple rule: follow a number equal to my weight. It’s an arbitrary measure, but it reminds me that who I follow influences my mental weight. If I follow you, it’s because we’re aligned as business partners or potential collaborators. That’s it. Friends and family? Sorry, no. I’d rather call or text you instead to see how you’re really doing. 2. Post and Don’t Check for 24 Hours I avoid checking views or likes immediately after posting. Instead, I wait 24 hours. This helps me steer clear of obsessing over instant validation and allows me to focus on creating without distraction. 3. It’s a Portfolio My Instagram serves as a reflection of my work. I always upload new content to my website first. If it’s good enough for my site, it’s a green light for Instagram. This keeps my platform aligned with my professional standards. 4. In and Out Before opening the app, I ask myself: Why am I here? Is it to check an event, find opportunities, or research a partner? Rarely do I go "just to look." Since attention is a precious resource, I want my time on Instagram to serve my goals, not drain my energy. 5. Turn Jealousy into Inspiration Instagram can be invidious—a platform that often stokes envy over others’ curated lives, appearances, or successes, rather than fostering genuine connection. It’s easy to fall into comparison and validation traps. Instead of dwelling on what others have, I see those feelings as clues to what I truly want to create for myself. Use jealousy as motivation, not as a barrier. Remember: Instagram is a tool—what you get out of it depends on how you choose to use it. By setting intentional boundaries, you can transform this platform into a source of inspiration, growth, and authentic connection. Use it mindfully, and let it serve your highest goals.
