2016 began with the decision to do something I loved versus something that made sense. Once again, life presented me with a familiar lesson: Doing what you love IS what makes sense.
For the last 2 years I had wanted to do something different. Not that I don’t already love what I do. I love being an artist! But after nearly a decade of making art and teaching Fearless Abstract Painting classes, I felt like I needed an infusion of something different.
Art + Interior Decorating = Makes Sense
I decided that the obvious choice was to add to my education and enroll in the Interior Decorating Program at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta. This decision would compliment my career by adding value to what I already had to offer, and it would make me a more well-rounded professional. I enrolled in the program, chose my classes and even went as far as paying for my tuition.
Excitement Level (Art + Interior Decorating) = 2 Points
Throughout this process, I attempted to feel some level of excitement by trying to convince myself that this choice “made sense”. And it was true; this choice did make sense. But from a scale of one to ten – Ten being super excited, one being not excited - My level of excitement was a whopping 2 points.
Excitement Level (Art + Yoga) = 10 Points
The longings of my heart painted an entirely different picture: What I wanted, what I really wanted, since my early twenties: To take a Yoga Teacher Certification Course. This got me so excited I was euphoric.
Yoga + Art = Does Not Make Sense
The idea seemed ludicrous. After a decade of investing in my art career, it felt wrong to “change course” and do something seemingly so unrelated to teaching art. Plus, what would people think? Would people sense a wavering in my resolution as an artist and buy less art from me?
Doing What You Love IS What Makes Sense
Finally, I decided to implement my Fearless Abstract Painting philosophy to my own life:
And so, against my “better judgment”, I turned off my brain and turned on my heart.
I cancelled my enrollment in the Interior Decorating Program and enrolled in a Yoga Teacher Certification Course in Salt Lake City, Utah.
What happened as a result of this decision was nothing short of miraculous:
And if that wasn’t enough, the list goes on:
Remember: Navigating from your heart space and allowing the feeling of excitement to direct your decisions is where miracles truly happen.
This blog was created to share my belief that the art-making process is a catalyst for transformation and personal empowerment. I am living proof.
