Commission Hot & Cold

11/4/2014

Last weekend I delivered two important painting commissions to two different clients. The paintings couldn’t have been more different: One was reds and yellows and the other was greens, greys and silver. In fact, the only thing they had in common was their size. Here’s why these painting commissions were particularly challenging:

1. Multiple Personalities

For over a month, I was jumping from two different painting “personalities” - one hot and one cold.

2. Studio Space

At the moment, my life is such that I have to split my time between two studios. Needless to say, this causes some major interruptions and a trail of art supplies littered between the two spaces.

3. Supplies

Working on 6 large canvasses (If you want to know why 6 canvasses instead of just 2 Read This) meant multiple trips to the art store, the hardware store, Wal-Mart for paper towels and a nearby Tim Horton’s for a large double-double please.

4. Boundaries

Because I am used to painting without preconceived ideas, painting within specific guide lines can be a challenge. I liken this to doing a workout you are not accustomed to. There may be growing pains.

Success!

I’m happy to say that both clients were incredibly happy with the finished pieces. I was also pleased. So pleased in fact, that both times after I got back into my car after the deliveries, I made a point to take a moment and give myself a round of applause. “Well done Sam! Good work!” I laughed joyfully and thanked my lucky stars. For images go to New York, New York Gallery.
