Student Question: I took a course of yours years ago in Penticton, BC. I hope you'll come back again one day soon. What brands of paint do you use? I'm using Stevenson but looking to switch. Suggestions? I appreciate your expertise and advice.
In this blog post, I answer student questions regarding: Canvas stretching, donating artwork, & where to buy art supplies in Calgary and surrounding area.
Q. Hi Samantha... I met you briefly at Missa this year (I was in a clay course) and love your work & philosophy. I've started painting using this approach and am receiving such joy from it. I have a question about the rollers you use... Are they just basic hardware store paint rollers? It's hard to tell from the Youtube videos... which are awesome!
Students often ask me if I build my own canvasses. The answer is no. My first and last attempt to stretch a canvas was back in 2008. At that time, I decided that stretching my own canvasses was not a worthy investment for the following reasons:
Painting is so much more than just a hobby. It’s a lifestyle. So when I travel, I make sure that I spend at least some of my time doing what I love the most: Fearless Abstract Painting. In an effort to travel light, I decided to buy art supplies in Hawaii. Lesson learned: This decision turned out to cost a lot more than paying the excess baggage fee.
In this blog post, I answer a student's question about How To Price A Painting by sharing two of my favourite articles written about this subject.
Q. I’m registered for your Fearless Abstract Painting Workshop at MISSA in July. I was just out looking for the paint (there’s a sale this weekend) and my usual stores (Opus and Art World) aren’t carrying Liquitex Basics any more. I wondered if they are particularly good or if another student grade acrylic (Amsterdam ? Buzz? Pebeo high viscosity? Pro acrylics?) would work as well with your approach. I have lots of time to order on line if you think Liquitex Basics are best, but just wondered if the other brands might do? Also neither carries WN Galleria. Do you know another brand for this?
Q: I was looking at the MISSA 2016 classes and noticed you are teaching. I'm looking at building my website and was wondering how much of your class would cover websites, branding and writing for websites and blogs? I'm also wondering if you offer classes at any other times as I do have a bit of a conflict on the MISSA dates.
Your questions answered: How to use acrylics & rubbing alcohol, upcoming classes in Salt Lake City, and where to shop for art supplies in Calgary.
In order to convince my fearless abstract painting students that painting is a lot more fun when we give up control, I painted blindfolded (for the length of one song) during one of my classes.
The results? See for yourself!
