Grounded in Beauty

10/30/2024

Picture
TITLE: A Firm Foundation
MEDIUM: Mixed Media
SIZE: 60" x 48"

I’m excited to share one of my favorite pieces: “A Firm Foundation.” This stunning 60” x 48” mixed media sculpture resembles a topographical map, as if a slice of earth has been lovingly cut and hung on the wall.

Incorporating actual Utah sand, it serves as a beautiful reminder of our planet’s sacredness. In a world filled with uncertainty, this piece encourages us to reconnect with nature and find stability in its enduring strength.

May this artwork inspire you to appreciate the beauty of our environment and help you discover your own firm foundation, no matter what challenges come your way.

An Oasis of the Spirit

"An Oasis of the Spirit" is one of four large-scale sculptural paintings inspired by the breathtaking beauty of Utah.

On the surreal shores of Antelope Island and the stark Bonneville Salt Flats, I find a deep connection to nature. Here, amidst the vastness, I am reminded that we are but fleeting whispers, shaped by the same forces that sculpted majestic canyons and mountains. Nature holds no judgment; it simply is. I both love and fear this truth.

Created after my visit to the Great Salt Lake on Antelope Island, this sculptural work is crafted from foraged materials, echoing the landscape from which it was born. Its rich textures reflect the ethereal beauty of the Great Salt Lake, inviting a sense of tranquility and connection to the natural world.

I invite you to explore the images and hope it resonates with you as deeply as it does with me.

The Art of Liberation

They began bound by rope—tight, rigid, unmoving. Not as captives, but as guardians of their own structure, holding together the essence of creation.

After basking in the relentless Utah sun for three days—the last golden embrace of summer—the ropes were gently removed. The pieces needed to breathe, to be free. This was a profound shedding of the bonds that confine us all.

What remains are the imprints of where the ropes once lay—marks of transformation, echoes of our own journeys. They remind us of the skins we cast off and the burdens we release, revealing the boundless potential that emerges when we dare to breathe freely.

In this act of unveiling, we find not just art, but a reflection of our shared humanity—a testament to resilience, rebirth, and the relentless pursuit of freedom.

The Beauty of Resilience

Your scars are beautiful. Can it be that our scars truly make us beautiful? How many of us genuinely believe that? Often, the unsightly parts of ourselves prompt us to hide in shame. But what if we chose to view our brokenness through the lens of acceptance and love? Your scars are not imperfections; they are beautiful marks of resilience. They tell the story of your journey, a testament to the strength that lies within. Embrace them, for they are the very essence of who you are.

You’re not broken. The canvas may bear literal holes—punctured, scraped, and scarred—but these marks tell a different story. When we think of something as broken, we often believe it no longer serves its intended purpose. Yet I propose a different perspective: broken open—like a tender plant emerging from its shell, stretching towards the sunlight. In this act of opening, we discover new possibilities, resilience, and growth. What appears damaged can serve as a gateway to beauty and transformation, inviting us to embrace the light that shines through.

Eternal Circles

10/1/2024

Picture
TITLE: You Are a Circle
MEDIUM: Mixed Media
SIZE: 48” x 36”

Across cultures, circles resonate with deep meaning and wisdom. In Buddhism, they represent the eternal cycles of life—birth, death, and rebirth. In Brazilian Candomblé, circles unite communities and honor ancestors through vibrant rituals. The Enso in Japanese Zen embodies strength, enlightenment, and the universe itself. For the Mayans, circles mirror the cyclical flow of time and the essence of community. In Native American traditions, the medicine wheel symbolizes life's continuous journey.

Inspired by this rich symbolism, I chose to create my own circle, layering local newspapers, paint, and organic materials from my surroundings. To me, the circle is a powerful reminder: you are a circle. Every action you take returns to you, shaping your journey. Embrace this wisdom, and let your life be a beautiful reflection of unity and connection.
