2019 – Rooted
After a volcanic eruption and two mandatory evacuations in Hawaii within six months, I returned to Salt Lake City seeking closeness to family. In that upheaval, my canvases became anchors — tangible roots reaching into the earth after violent tremors had shaken everything loose.
Painting became my way of assimilating chaos and restoring order. Whenever life shifts dramatically, I turn to the canvas to feel rooted. No matter where I am, painting is home.
These works are built with salt from the Great Salt Lake, iron-rich Utah dirt, foraged sawdust, plaster, repurposed paint, metallic pigments, ash, and local newspaper — materials that weave rupture and renewal into every layer.
