2008 – Surfacing

2008 — Surfacing

Blank canvas flat on the floor. We stare at each other. I touch you. I run my hands over the taut, stretched cotton. I smile. I kiss you and whisper thanks.

I squeeze paint directly onto the surface and use a roller to move it — blending colors, carving lines and shapes. Texture emerges through acrylic paint, alcohol inks, and common household materials.

Water is essential to the process. Straight from the tube, acrylic is tight and rigid. With water, the paint relaxes, takes a deep breath, and begins to dance across the canvas. I tilt and manipulate the surface, responding intuitively to the shapes that appear. Nothing is preconceived. The work directs me.

This fearless abstract process is one of adding and subtracting until balance and harmony emerge.

These paintings are a celebration of redemption. Once, I saw myself as a victim — broken, deficient, lacking. Today I stand empowered, grateful, and renewed. Through Surfacing, I honor the transformative power of choice.
